Our Lady of Stonewall
Acrylic on canvas
70 x 100 cm
Original artwork, unframed.
Our Lady of Stonewall borrows the devotional structure of Our Lady of Guadalupe - the frontal figure, the radiant surround, the sense of apparition - and turns it toward queer survival, sexuality and defiance. The red form behind the body reads as aura, flame, wound, costume and stage curtain, while the yellow ground pushes the image toward shrine, protest sign and carnival.
The painting holds reverence and irreverence together. Stonewall becomes not only an event in queer history, but a living mythology: theatrical, vulnerable, funny, sexual and unashamed. The figure does not ask for permission to appear. It arrives already crowned.
