"Midnight in the Garden" is part of Brendan Enright's recent queer figurative work, in which the body appears alongside invented beings, masks, flowers and erotic-symbolic forms. The painting stages an encounter between a crouched nude and a flowering apparition, holding the image between intimacy, theatricality and unease.
At the same time, it reverse a long art-historical habit: the passively displayed female nude is displaced by a male figure who is vulnerable, exposed and emotionally charged.
