Gaze
Acrylic on canvas.
50 x 70 cm.
Original artwork, unframed.
A naked male figure bends forward on a dark stage, caught between exposure, performance, and desire. Around him, a cartoon-like audience looks on from the blackness, turning the private act of looking into something public, comic and charged.
The title plays with the closeness of Gaze and gays, letting the painting move between erotic looking, queer humour, and theatrical display. But the viewer is not outside the scene. Standing before the work, we become part of its chain of looking: one man looking, an audience looking, and finally the art viewer looking too.
Gaze is a painting about desire, spectatorship, vulnerability, and the uneasy comedy of being seen.
