Between Us stages an intimate, uneasy encounter between two figures: one masked, bright, almost comic; the other exposed, darker, and more vulnerable. The painting plays with closeness, desire, performance, and the uncertaintty of what is being offered or withheld between two bodies.
The work has a raw, theatrical quality. The flat blocks of blue and orange push the figures forward, while the rough handling of the paint keeps the image unstable and alive. It is playful at first glance, but the longer you look, the more complicated the exchange becomes.
